Above Bar (that is above Bargate) is where you'll find several shopping centres with the modern West Quay Shopping Centre dominating them all. West Quay has kicked off the town centre regeneration and contains two department stores and 100 other shops on two floors under glazed cover as well as a separate Food Terrace. It's classed as a regional shopping centre with the main branch for several designer and high street stores. Around the back at Arundel Circus is a walkway leading you down to Southampton's historic town walls and facing Arundel Tower. This space is also where the Spa Gardens fountain and botanical gardens once stood and where Jane Austen and her family took their daily walk. The West Quay Centre is open from 9am-6pm daily with late night opening on Thursdays til 8pm. Sunday opening is 11am-5pm.

Just next to the Bargate monument is the Bargate Shopping Centre. It houses 35 specialist retail outlets including alternative and outdoor clothing shops, a cycle shop as well as an internet cafe and Jongleurs comedy club.

Between these and the shops on East Street, Bedford Place and Above Bar Street and stretching up towards the university, you've got a huge choice of shops, pubs, cafes and eateries. So everything you need for a full day basing the wallet and taking those important pit stops! The majority of shops in the city centre are open seven days a week with late opening on Thursday.

Southampton Markets

Bargate is the location for several markets held in Southampton's city centre.

Every Friday is the general market from 9am-5pm. Around 90 stalls offer all kinds of produce from fruit and veg, organic and local produce, food stalls from Europe - it's well worth a stroll down just see to see what's on offer.

Every Saturday in the month there's a different market at Bargate with the Arts and Design market on the first Saturday showcasing individually designed and original art work as well as new and vintage designer wear. Antiques and collectables are on the third Saturday of every month and farmers' markets are held on the second and fourth Saturdays. On Sundays it's the World Market with a wide range of goods from all over the world.
