Lymington Tourist Information

Lymington is a popular waterside town on the southern border of the New Forest. It was known as Lentune in ancient times and just outside the village is Buckland Rings, an important earthwork where Neolithic and Bronze Age finds have been found. The town's fortune flourished by yielding salt from the sea from creating saltpans in the marshes nearby. After a period of being a known smugglers' haunt Lymington developed into a shipbuilding and sea trading port during the Middle Ages, a tradition that continues today as yachts and boats are still made here.

Today Lymington's Old Town with its narrow cobbled streets lined with traditional seafaring and Georgian buildings is ideal for a stroll down to the waterfront. The town leads you downhill from the main car park and museum to the Quay where pleasure craft and fishing boats moor up. Here you can pick up boat trips or ferries to the Isle of Wight or take it easy at one of the pubs or restaurants on the Quay.
